Dropped anchor supported in polls

TORONTO (CP) - Avery Haines, the CTV Newsnet anchor fired this week for on-air remarks that were deemed improper, seems to have considerable support according to some polls.
On The View, Barbara Walters' afternoon talk show on NBC-TV, the audience was surveyed after a discussion of the case. The results were 81 per cent in Haines's favour, 19 per cent against, with the panelists agreeing it was a case of excess political correctness.
Ironically, The View is carried on CTV, the network that dismissed Haines.
Meanwhile on the Canoe Web site, the same question was put: "Do you think CTV Newsnet anchor Avery Haines should have been fired over her 'off-the-cuff comments' on the air?"
Out of 6,571 respondents as of Tuesday afternoon, 68 per cent voted No and 32 per cent voted yes.
