GSS Agent Avishai Raviv
to Stand Trial for
Not Preventing
Yitzchak
Rabin Death

General Security Service (GSS/Shin-Bet) agent/provocateur Avishai Raviv will face criminal charges for not taking steps to prevent the assassination of Yitzchak Rabin.

Public pressure coupled with new evidence in the case appears to have compelled judicial officials in the government to take actions to bring the government agent to justice.

Recently, Margalit Har-Sheffi became the first person in Israeli history to be convicted of not preventing a crime. She was a friend of Raviv and convicted assassin Yigal Amir. The court ruled that she had ample knowledge of Amir's plans, and therefore should have reported remarks made by Amir to authorities. The court ruled her inaction was a criminal offense.

Raviv, who was also involved in the same social circles as Har-Sheffi and others who knew Amir, together with increasing public pressure to hand down an indictment against Raviv, may have forced the attorney general's hand. (Har-Sheffi's attorney has filed an appeal in her case).

It has been documented that Raviv had sufficient knowledge of events prior to the assassination, perhaps more than Har-Sheffi. More startling is the news that Raviv is documented to have encouraged Amir and others to take action and carry out a political assassination, this while acting as an undercover GSS agent infiltrating the right-wing camp.

Raviv has already been documented to have crossed the legal line and encouraged right-wingers to break the law and carry out acts of violence to entrap them. Witnesses have reported hearing Raviv speaking with Amir, trying to convince him to kill the prime minister.

Deputy Minister Michael Eitan has been a leading government voice calling for a criminal indictment against Raviv, pointing out that the facts in the case dictate a criminal indictment be forthcoming. State Attorney General Elyakim Rubinstein appears to have done everything to skirt the issue, but at this time, it appears the political and public pressures are too strong and he is compelled to move ahead with the case.
