RAVIV PLEADS "NOT GUILTY"
The trial of General Security Services agent-provocateur Avishai Raviv
opened yesterday with the accused denying both charges leveled against him: incitement to violence, and failing to report Yigal Amir's intentions to murder Prime Minister Yitzchak Rabin. The next session of the trial will be held on Dec. 16.

Defense attorney Shomroni Cohen told the court that he was unable to
prepare a sufficient defense for his client, because he had not been
allowed by the state to view crucial evidence or to meet with key figures
in the GSS. "The prosecution refused to release the accumulation of
detailed evidence regarding Raviv," filmmaker and journalist Adir Zik - who has followed and reported on the Raviv affair for four years now - told Arutz-7 today. "After Atty. Cohen stood firm on his need to see the
evidence, the court instructed him to sign a paper of confidentiality, and
he is now permitted to view the material. Cohen is also planning to
present a new list of GSS figures with whom he wants to meet before the next hearing," Zik said.

"What's amusing about this trial," said Zik, "is that the prosecution is
attempting to prove that Raviv established Eyal [a fictitious militant
right-wing organization] against the wishes of his GSS bosses. This is
really ludicrous... But even if we assume that to be true, GSS chief Carmi Gillon and Raviv's other bosses could have, as soon as they heard about it, simply told him to close it down."

Despite his criticism, Zik noted that "the very fact that the trial is taking place at all is a tribute to Arutz-7, HaTzofeh, and Israel's freedom of the press."
