Society's view on teen pregnancy in 1977-1978

Society's views about single parents had been changing in this era. More and more single women were keeping their babies, and not being sent away to "visit their aunt" to hide the pregnancy and adoption. However, there were still many people (like my parents) who held the old view of getting pregnant out of wedlock was a woman's punishment for having sex. Many people also believed that young, single women could not be good mothers. If you lived in the suburbs (like me), you knew nothing of welfare, food stamps, or any other type of assistance a single woman with children could obtain.
