  • Note: During the reign of Henry VI, the king's ill mental health forced him to submit the kingdom to the rule of a Protector, Richard, Duke of York. As the government of Henry VI became more inefficient, there was a growing clamor for Richard to govern the country. At first Henry's supporters resisted, but when the Queen gave birth to a son, Edward in 1454, thus excluding Richard from the succession, the clamor mounted. Richard took up arms against King Henry VI and defeated the Lancastrian army at St. Albans in what was to be the first battle of the War of the Roses. In 1460, Richard formally claimed the throne but he was killed in battle at Wakefield. The following spring, his son Edward was proclaimed the first Yorkist King. The Yorkist dynasty only lasted until 1485, but in this time England enjoyed a leap forwards in national prosperity.
