CRHA HOPES CONTRACT APPROVAL BODES WELL

By MICHAEL LAU -- Calgary Sun
The city's health authority hopes a contract deal with support staff at Rockyview Hospital will lead to a quick settlement at Foothills and Alberta Children's hospitals.
CUPE local 1240 -- representing support workers at Rockyview and Colonel Belcher -- voted 88.9% in favor of the new contract.
It gives them a 12% pay hike over three years.
AUPE support workers at Foothills and Children's Hospitals resume negotiations today.
Yesterday, the Labor Relations Board denied a request from the CRHA to ban the union from embarking on an illegal strike.
"We see this as a benchmark settlement," Al Martin, CRHA chief of corporate services, said of the CUPE settlement.
"I certainly hope it will be seen (by AUPE workers) as positive for the CRHA and CUPE, which accepted it."
AUPE representative Jackie Hill said union negotiators will thoroughly review the CUPE contract.
"We have to look at everything individually to see how it impacts on our proposals -- we're looking for a fair increase for everybody," said Hill.
CUPE sought regional wage parity, but officials declined comment on the AUPE negotiations.
"We do the same work, but our contracts and contract language are very different," said Sue Katelnikoff, a spokesman for CUPE local 1240.
Meanwhile, hospital workers voted to overwhelmingly support their union in upcoming talks with Calgary's regional health authority.
AUPE president Dan MacLellan said workers from Locals 40 and 55 voted to support the union during contract talks, but wouldn't say what that means.
MacLellan said he could not call last night's vote a strike vote because of legal concerns.
