Black activist says cops brutalized her

After some improvement in recent years, relations between the black community and officers at downtown 51 Division have taken a turn for the worse.

Murphy Browne, a volunteer with the Organization of Parents of Black Children, has filed a formal complaint with police after she says she was pushed twice against a fence and called a "black bitch" by a 51 Division officer.

Browne says she was talking to one of two men police had just handcuffed when the incident occurred.

She says the officer in question, who was away this week and unavailable for comment, hissed in her face and repeatedly poked her shoulder with a forefinger.

"I could feel his breath," she says. Police were reportedly responding to a swarming incident. About 100 protestors came out to a demo in St. Jamestown July 16 in support of Browne.

Unit commander Don Mantle declined to comment on Browne's complaint since it's under investigation. EDM
