Maude got her teaching diploma at South Georgia College in Douglas andtaught school for several years before her marriage. She also worked forSam and Jake Fine in Fine's Department Store in Metter. After Charlie'sdeath, she ran a boarding house called the Wayside Inn, which served as ameeting place for all the young people of Metter. Maude died March 22,1989 at the age of 95.

Charlie Smith worked for the Georgia Highway Department. He ran for andwas elected Sheriff of Candler County in 1936. He died December 25,1936, one week before he was to be sworn into office.
