My Views on Welfare
Websters New World Dictionary defines welfare as, "...the state of being or doing well; condition of health, happiness, and comfort; well-being; prosperity..."
Our welfare system was established for the temporary aid of those individuals who have fallen upon hard times. It was never intended to be a life-style choice and yet that's exactly what's it's become for many Americans. We do these individuals a great injustice when we allow them to remain on the government dole generation after generation. We strip them of their pride and self-esteem....
Another aspect of this controversial subject I find disturbing, is how it's being linked to Constitutional Rights. Since the passage of Proposition 187 in California, opponents of this law have claimed that it infringes upon the Constitutinal Rights of illegal immigrants. Excuse me, but doesn't the word illegal mean 'against the law'? If a person is in this country illegally, what rights are they supposed to have under OUR Constitution? When even a legal American citizen, who has been convicted of a felony, loses the majority of their Constitutional Rights, why should those rights be granted to a person living in this country in direct defiance of the law?
