Syrians read local newspapers in Damascus April 14, 2003 after repeated U.S. accusations that their country was harboring elements affiliated with the government of Iraqi President Saddam Hussein. Israel joined pressure on Syria on Monday, demanding it get Hizbollah guerrillas out of Lebanon and accusing it of supporting terrorism. Lantos held talks with top Syrian officials and urged Damascus to oust radical Palestinian factions, block Iranian support for Lebanese guerrilla group Hezbollah and withdraw its troops from Lebanon in exchange of better ties with Washington and possible U.S. economic aid.

Secretary of State Colin Powell April 14, 2003. Powell said that the United States will examine possible diplomatic or economic measures against Syria, for its continued occupation of Lebanon and support for terrorist organizations. The United States also suspects Syria of developing chemical weapons.
