ANTHONY ACCARDO

(1906- ) (AKA:Batters; Big Tuna; Joe Batters; Joe Batty)

At age sixteen, Accardo, made his rise through the ranks as a gunman and enforcer for Capone. It was at this time, around the early 1920s, Accardo earned his fierce sobriquet, Joe Batters, one that is never used in his presence. Aspects that were not overlooked by Capone were Accardo's balance of brute force and velvet force.

When Capone was finally fed up with feuding with George "Bugs" Moran and his gang, on the northside of Chicago in 1929, Accardo was employued along with a few others to set up, what would be known later as the St. Valentine's Day massacre.

In 1929, Alphonse Capone went to jail, for a short period of time. He left his lieutenants to run the empire in Chicago. Jake Guzik took charge of Administration, Frank Nitti Operations, and Accardo head of Enforcement.
