BRITISH COLONY OF BARBADOS
The uninhabited island of Barbados was annexed by the English in 1625 and colonized
in 1627. It was privately owned by the Carlisle and Willoughby families until 1662
when it became a crown dependency. (1)
The island was the center of the administrative union of the Windward Islands from
1833 to 1885.
(1) The Willoughby continued to be entitled to part of the export duties until
1833.

ANGLICAN CHURCH IN BARBADOS
The Anglican religion was introduced on Barbados in 1627 when the English settled
it.
The island was subject to the diocese of London until 1824 when a separate diocese
of Barbados - which became part of the selfgoverning province of the West Indies in
1883 - was established. (1)
(1) At first the diocese also included British Guiana, the Leeward Islands,
Trinidad and the Windward Islands.
But later new dioceses were detached from its jurisdiction :
- 1842 : Antigua (for the Leeward Islands)
British Guyana
- 1872 : Trinidad (and Tobago)
- 1878 : the Windward Islands
