BERLIN

CITY OF BERLIN 1848 - 1945

The town of Berlin is first mentioned in 1244. It became the permanent residence of the Electors of Brandenburg in 1470. As the capital of the Kingdom of Prussia since 1701, the city also became the capital of the German Empire in 1871. In 1881 Berlin - which till then had been a part of the Regierungsbezirk (district) Potsdam in the Province of Brandenburg - became a separate City district directly subordinated to the provincial government. In 1920 the city was merged with 7 neighbouring towns (Charlottenburg, Köpenick, Lichtenberg, Neukölln, Schöneberg, Spandau and Wilmersdorf) and some other areas to form "Gross-Berlin" (Great-Berlin) (1) In 1936 Berlin was detached from the province of Brandenburg to become a separate administrative unit of Prussia. (1) Since 1912 Berlin, Charlottenburg, Neukölln, Lichtenberg, Schöneberg, Spandau, Wilmersdorf and several surrounding villages had already formed a Cooperative Alliance handling common affairs such as public transports, etc. Directors of the "Purpose Alliance" Great-Berlin Direktoren des Zweckverbands Gross-Berlin 1912 - 1918 Karl Friedrich Steininger 1864 - 1918 Otto Fischbeck 1865 - 1939 1918 - 1920 Erich Giese* __________________________________________________________________________________
