GUANTÁNAMO BAY

U.S. BASE OF GUANTÁNAMO BAY

In 1898, at the start of the Spanish-American War, an U.S. Marine Corps camp was established on McCalla Hill at Guantánamo Bay, to serve as base for the further conquest of Cuba. Five years later, in 1903, independent Cuba agreed to lease - for an annual sum of $ 2000 - a "Naval Reservation", located in the area, to the U.S. to serve as a naval and coaling station. (1) (1) The agreement also gave the U.S. the right to establish another base at Bahía Honda. This area was however returned to Cuba in 1912, in exchange for larger facilities at Guantánamo Bay. In 1934 the Treaty of Washington reaffirmed U.S. perpetual rights to Guantánamo Bay. __________________________________________________________________________
