ISHKODRA

OSMANLI VILAYET OF ISHKODRA

The Osmanli Elayet of Ishkodra (Alb.: Shkodër) in Northern Albabnia was created in 1862 out of parts of the Elayet Rumeli. It was abolished in 1874 and its territory was transferred first to the Vilayet of Prizrin and then to the Vilayet of Monastir. In 1875 it was restored as a Valilik (= name given to a small Vilayet) and in 1877 it again became an Elayet. Ishkodra was finally made a Vilayet in 1881. (1) In 1912, on the eve of the Balkan Wars, the Vilayet included two Sandjaks : - Ishkodra (from 1870 to 1881 actually the only Sandjak of the Elayet/Valilik) - Dirash (Alb.: Durrës) In 1913 most of the Vilayet became part of Albania, only some frontier regions of the Sandjak of Ishkodra going to Montenegro. (1) The Vilayet was the homeland of most of the autonomous Malësi Tribes. (See here for more on this) __________________________________________________________________________________
