Jersey, one of the major islands of the Anglo - Norman territory of the Channel

century and remained so ever since. (1)
From 1940 to 1945 Jersey was occupied and administered by Germany.

MINOR ISLANDS : THE ECREHOUS AND THE MINQUIERS
At the beginning of the 19th century both island groups were without much interest,
being only occasionally visited by smugglers and fishermen. (3)
Things changed when oyster fishery gained in importance : Jersey started setting up
an embryonic administration in both groups of islands and France started claiming
both the Ecréhous (since 1886) and the Minquiers (since 1851?).
(3) From 1848 to 1898 the Ecréhous were inhabited by Philippe Pinel, a fisherman
who styled himself "King of the Ecréhous"
