FRENCH COLONY OF MAYOTTE

In 1841 the island of Mayotte/Mawuti - a Sultanate established in the 16th century (?) - was sold to France by its ruler. It was formally annexed and organized as a French Colony in 1843. ____________________________________________________________________________
