NO MAN'S LAND AND THE TERRITORY OF CIMARRON
No man's Land was the informal name given since ca 1885 to the unorganized tract
of land which had been ceded to the U.S. central government by the State of Texas
in 1850. (Formal name : Public Land Strip)
The area was relatively unused until ca 1871 when cattle holders started using it
as grazing land.
Ca 1880 they were joined by Kansas settlers and soon small villages and towns were
established.
At first some kind of government was exercised by local Vigilance Committees.
In 1886 they united to form the Respective Claim Board and the following year a
convention proclaimed the Territory of Cimarron.
The proclamation was however not recognized by the U.S. government and the position
of the area remained unclarified until 1890, when it became part of the Territory
of Oklahoma.
