Guinea-Bissau/Rome: Pope John Paul II appeals for peaceful solution to conflict

Vatican City, Oct. 29 (Lusa) - Pope John Paul II appealed on Wednesday for a peaceful solution to the current armed conflict in Guinea-Bissau and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

The Pope made the appeal during his general audience held on St. Peter's square every Wednesday.

"We are praying to the Virgin Mary that the warring sides undertake to find peaceful solutions", Pope John Paul II said about the conflicts in the two countries. Lusa/Fim

Guinea-Bissau: French ambassador says Paris supplied Senegal with ammunition

Dakar, Oct. 29 (Lusa) - France has supplied the Senegalese army with ammunition since its intervention in the conflict in Guinea-Bissau that erupted in June, French ambassador to Dakar, Andre Lewin, has told the Wal Fadjri daily.

The ambassador's remarks were published by the newspaper in Dakar on Wednesday.

Lewin also quoted as saying that Senagal's intervention in the conflict in Guinea-Bissau had taken place without France's previous knowledge. The ambassador was also quoted as saying that he "understood" Senegal's military intervention in the conflict Guinea-Bissau, "based on agreement signed between the two countries". Lusa/Fim

Guinea-Bissau/Portugal: Rebellious "military junta" to attend peace talks in the Gambia

Lisbon, Oct. 29 (Lusa) - Guinea-Bissau's insurgent "military junta" will present at top-level peace talks in Banjul, capital of the Gambia, on Thursday, a rebel spokesman told LUSA in Lisbon by telephone from Bissau on Wednesday.

Commander Zamora Induta said in a Nigerian aeroplane would take a delegation of the "military junta", including its leader, Brig. Ansumane Mane, from Bissau to Banjul on Thursday morning.

Induta said the rebel delegation would comprise 15 members, adding that Portuguese and Swedish would also be aboard the Nigerian plane.
