Guinea-Bissau: President Vieira Says 'Too Early' to Decide Whether He'll Face Polls Again

Banjul, Nov. 3 (Lusa) - Only hours after signing a peace accord with rebels, President Nino Vieira of Guinea-Bissau said Monday he would convene a meeting of the country's political parties and the insurgent Military Junta to pick a new prime minister to head a "national unity" government.

Asked on arrival in the Gambian capital if he would stand for re-election in balloting called for under the peace agreement, Vieira said it was "still too early" for him to decide whether he would be a candidate.

He described the accord reached earlier in the day in the Nigerian capital, Abuja, as "positive" and "a victory of the people." The agreement ending a five-month revolt by most of the country's military calls, among other things, for the setting up of a "national unity" cabinet to prepare internationally supervized presidential and legislative elections by next March at the latest. - Lusa

Guinea-Bissau: Rebels happy with peace accords signed in Abuja

Banjul, Nov. 3 (Lusa) - A spokesman for the Guinea-Bissau's insurgent ''Military Junta'' said in Banjul on Monday his movement was happy with the peace accord signed in Abuja on Sunday night. The agreement, signed by the President João Bernardo ''Nino'' Vieira and rebel leader Brig. Ansumane Mane, calls for a re-affirmation of a ceasefire signed in August, the withdrawal of all foreign forces and the introduction of a buffer force of West African peacekeppers. A government of national unity is to be formed within 10 days after signing of the agreement and presidential and legislative elections are to be held no later than next month.

Rebel spokesman Zamora Induta said the agreement had met his movement's main demands, such as the formation of a government of national unity. Under the accord, the rebels will designate the future government's ministers for defence, home affairs and veterans.-Lusa
