Guinea-Bissau: Joint Commission Planned to Implement Peace Accord
Bissau, Nov. 5 (Lusa) - Guinea-Bissau's ruling party and the rebel Military Junta reached agreement Wednesday on the formation of a joint commission to oversee the implementation of the country's peace accord.
The ambassadors of Portugal, France, Sweden and the European Union, who helped mediate a solution to the conflict, are shuttling between the two sides to speed up the creation of the commission.
A diplomatic source told Lusa he hoped the joint commission would be in place by the weekend.
Among its first priorities, he added, would be overseeing the reopening of Bissau's harbor and airport, which have been closed since the military revolt against President Nino Vieira flared June 7.
The warring sides reached a peace agreement Nov. 2 at a summit of the Economic Community of West African States in Abuja, Nigeria. - Lusa
