Guinea-Bissau: Oppositionist Yala Says He'll Run for President

Buba, Guinea-Bissau, Nov. 6 (Lusa) - Kumba Yala, the Guinea-Bissau opposition leader that forced President Nino Vieira into run-off balloting in 1994, said Friday he would stand for the presidency again in elections set by the country's four-day-old peace accord.

Only with elections could the West African country find "true reconciliation" after its five-month civil conflict, Yala told Lusa in his hometown of Buba, where he took refugee from the fighting. He said he would not return to the capital Bissau, about 75 kms to the northwest, until Senegalese troops backing Vieira had departed. Vieira, he charged, had "ceased to have the moral conditions to rule," after having called in foreign troops to aid him in a failed attempt to put down the revolt in his armed forces.

Under the peace agreemnt signed in Nigeria Nov. 2 simultaneous presidential and legislative balloting must be held by March under the sponsorship of a yet to be formed "national unity" government. Head of the second biggest opposition group in parliament, the Social renovation Party, Yala said he did not intend to take part in the new cabinet but would be willing to indicate the names of "personalities." - Lusa
