Guinea-Bissau: Consolidation of ceasefire and formation of government of national unity on agenda of meeting

Bissau, Nov. 16 (Lusa) - The consolidation of Guinea-Bissau's ceasefire and the setting-up of a government of national unity will be the main points on the agenda of the next meeting of a commmittee appointed to implement the Abuja peace accord, an informed source told LUSA in Bissau last week.

The executive committee's next meeting is scheduled to be held on Tuesday.

Sources close to the committee said a government of national unity would be headed by a person acceptable to both President "Nino" Vieira and the insurgent "Military Junta." The upcoming meeting could also lead to the setting-up of a temporary group of international observers to monitor the peace accord's implementation, according to the sources.-Lusa

Guinea-Bissau: Two Opposition Parties Refuse to Meet President on Creation of New Cabinet

Bissau, Nov. 17 (Lusa) - Guinea-Bissau's main opposition Bafata Movement party has challenged President Nino Vieira's power to oversee the formation of a "national unity" government and said it would not appear at a meeting of parties convened by Vieira for Tuesday.

In a letter to the president Monday, Bafata said that under the country's Nov. 2 peace accord the responsibility for forming a transitional cabinet to supervize elections fell to a Joint Commission composed of the two warring sides and not to Vieira. The largest of the opposition parties with 19 seats in the 100-member parliament, Bafata was the second group to refuse the president's invitation.

Earlier, the Union for Change (UM), the third biggest opposition party, announced it would not meet with Vieira until foreign troops backing his administration had withdrawn, as called for under the peace agreement. Lusa/end
