Guinea-Bissau: Portugal Encourages Moves Toward Elections

Lisbon, Nov. 20 (Lusa) - Senior Portuguese diplomat Luis Amado told a visiting Guinea-Bissau parliamentary delegation Friday it was imperative the West African country decide on an electoral calendar to fully implement its peace accord.

Amado, assistant secretary for cooperation and foreign affairs, said the longer it took to form a transitional "national unity" cabinet in Bissau "the more difficult it will be to carry out the electoral calendar."

Under the Nov. 2 peace agreement, presidential and legislative elections should be held simultaneously by March under the aegis of a transitional government.

Amado also said he told the four-member parliamentary delegation, composed of ruling party and opposition deputies, that Guinea-Bissau had "not been abandoned" by the international community.

He announced that a 130-ton shipment of Portuguese food aid was scheduled to arrive in Bissau at the weekend.
