Guinea-Bissau: International Aid Focus of February Meet in Geneva

Dakar, Nov. 23 (Lusa) - The United Nations Development Program (UNDP) is planning a meeting of international donors to mobilize resources for the reconstruction of war-scarred Guinea-Bissau.

The UNDP's general-coordinator for the West African country, Henrik Olsen, said Friday that the meeting was planned for Geneva next February.

Initial discussions, involving most organizations and countries aiding Guinea-Bissau, took place in the Senegalese capital last week. Lusa/end

Guina-Bissau: Calm returns after brief front line shooting incident

Bissau, Nov. 23 (Lusa) - Calm has returned to Bissau after a brief shooting incident on the frontline in Bissaque, about five kilometres from the capital Bissau, on Sunday.

According to the government-controlled National Radio station of Guinea-Bissau, the incident was triggered by an accidental shot that was later reportedly followed by another round of gunfire. The station blamed the insurgent "Military Junta" for the incident, maintaining the government's forces had not responded.-Lusa

Guinea-Bissau: Joint Commission Resumes Discussions on New Government

Bissau, Nov. 24 (Lusa) - The Joint Commission overseeing implementation of Guinea-Bissau's Nov. 2 peace accord was meeting again Tuesday to discuss the formation of a "national unity" government mandated to prepare elections.

At its last meeting Friday, the commission, composed of government and rebel representatives, began debating the structure of the new cabinet and names of possible ministers.

Separately, a special envoy of Togolese President Gnassingbe Eyadema arrived in Bissau Tuesday for talks with President Nino Vieira and rebel chief Brig. Ansumane Mane. The Togolese leader currently holds the presidency of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) which gave final form to Guinea-Bissau's peace agreement and will provide peacekeeping forces.
