Guinea-Bissau: Vieira, Isolated, Sends Prime Minister to Paris Summit

Lisbon, Nov. 27 (Lusa) - Embattled President Nino Vieira of Guinea-Bissau has sent his prime minister to the France-Africa summit in Paris in his place, given political uncertainties at home, a diplomatic source told Lusa Thursday.

The decision to send Prime Minister Carlos Correia as head of the country's delegation came amid moves in the Guinea-Bissau parliament demanding Vieira's resignation.

A majority of the 100-member legislature, including ruling party lawmakers, were expected to approve a call Friday for Vieira's "immediate renunciation" of the presidency.

The motion is based on charges the president violated the constitution in declaring a state of emergency and calling in foreign troops without parliament's approval in June on the outbreak of an armed forces rebellion.
