Guinea-Bissau: West African Peacekeepers Deployed in Mid-December, Senegal Says

Dakar, Dec. 2 (Lusa) - Nigeria, Gambia, Benin and Togo will deploy 1,450 soldiers for the West African peacekeeping force in Guinea-Bissau in mid-December, the Senegalese foreign minister has announced.

In a statement Monday, Jacques Baudin said France would provide logistical support for the peacekeepers, 1,000 of whom would be stationed along the border with Senegal, with the remainder deployed in the capital.

Washington has also offered logistical support, Baudin said, but awaited clarification of the peacekeeping force's needs.

He said the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), which oversaw Guinea-Bissau's Nov. 2 peace accord, would present United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan with a detailed report on the needs of the peacekeeping contingent Dec. 11.

Guinea-Bissau: Main Road to Interior Reopened to Civilian Traffic

Bissau, Dec. 2 (Lusa) - The main road linking Guinea-Bissau's capital with the interior has been reopened to civilian traffic in a further sign of the country's return to normality following a five-month military rebellion.

The Bissau-Safim road was reopened Monday, though it continues to be divided in sections controlled by government and rebel Military Junta troops.

A smaller road, linking the capital to Prabis, was reopened last week.

Despite the gradual return to normality following the signing of a peace accord Nov. 2, observers said about 80 percent of Bissau's estimated 300,000 residents continued as refugees in interior towns and villages.
