Guinea-Bissau: IMF, WB Press for Rapid Formation of New Government
Bissau, Dec. 3 (Lusa) - The World Bank and the International Monetary Fund have written to the Guinea-Bissau government expressing their concern over delays in the creation of a new post-war cabinet and in launching the reconstruction of country's economy.
In a letter sent in late November to Finance Minister Issufo Sanha, the two institutions urge the "the greatest speed possible in setting up a new government, entrusted with the necessary authority and efficiency."
The WB and IMF underline, in the letter obtained by Lusa Wednesday, their "preoccupation with the delay" demonstrated in "a return to political stability" following the signing of a peace accord Nov. 2.
In a related development, the speaker of the Guinea-Bissau parliament, Malam Bacai Sanha, called Wednesday on the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) "to assume their responsibilites and speed up the sending" of their promised peacekeeping force.
The peace accord was reached during an ECOWAS summit in Avbuja, Nigeria, with the West African organization pledging the deployment a peacekeeping force.
The foreign minister of Senegal said earlier this week that a four-nation force of 1,450 soldiers should be deployed in Guinea-Bissau by mid-December, allowing the withdrawal of Senegalese and Guinea-Conakry contingents who had backed embattled President Nino Vieira.
