Guinea-Bissau: Fadul Seeks 'Permanent Reinforcement" of Lisbon Links

Bissau, Dec. 9 (Lusa) - Guinea-Bissau's prime minister designate, Francisco Fadul, has praised Portugal's "magnificent" role as a mediator in the country's recent conflict and said he would seek a "permanent reinforcement" of bilateral ties.

Describing himself as "an African of Portuguese culture," Fadul told Lusa Tuesday that Lisbon's efforts as a mediator had been "extremely relevant," a role Guinea-Bissau "will not forget."

"To say we plan on the permanent reinforcement of cooperation" with Portugal "would be to say very little," he added, in his first interview with a foreign journalist.

Fadul said he hoped his first visit abroad as prime minister would be to Portugal, where he studied law in his youth.

Guinea-Bissau: Joint Executive Committe argues over two ministerial appointments

Bissau, Dec 9 (Lusa) - Guinea-Bissau's Joint Executive Committee has failed to reach a consensus on two important cabinet appointments to the future Government of National Unity.

Tuesday's impasse over the two ministerial appointments has led to new "consultations" on the matter. The Joint Executive Committee comprises representatives of the current government and the insurgent "Military Junta" which has rebelled against the regime of President "Nino" Vieira since June.

Informed sources told LUSA in Bissau on Tuesday the two sides continued to argue over the portfolios of national defence and veteran affairs, as well as territorial administration. Both sides have claimed the two ministries for themselves.-Lusa
