Guinea-Bissau: 'Peace Comes to Stay,' Says President Vieira
Bissau, Dec. 17 (Lusa) - President Nino Vieira of Guinea-Bissau promised Thursday that "peace has come to stay," describing his peace accord with the rebel military movement as being "without suspicions or reprisals."
Speaking on his return from a meeting with rebel chief Brig. Ansumane Mane in Togo Tuesday, Vieira said the "only winners are the people" in the accord which ended a five-month armed forces' rebellion.
"There are no losers or victors," he added in a radio address. In the Lome meeting, Vieira and Mane agreed on the composition of a transitional "national unity" government to be led by Prime Minister-designate Francisco Fadul.
Under the peace agreement reached Nov. 2, the new cabinet is mandated to prepare simultaneous presidential and legislative elections by March.
