Guinea-Bissau: PM Fadul says armed forces are top priority
Bissau, Dec 23 (Lusa) - The head of the future national unity government in Guinea-Bissau, Francisco Fadul, said today in a radio interview that his top priority would be to resolve problems in the armed forces and those affecting veterans of the country's war of independence.
In an interview broadcast on the rebel radio station, the "Voice of the Military Junta", Fadul spoke of the serious difficulties faced by most members of the Guinea-Bissau armed forces. He also said that his government would not forget veterans of the colonial war against Portugal, which ended with Guinea-Bissau's independence in 1975.
Fadul said that his government had been promised aid by an unidentified "Arab and African" country. He added that he would invite leaders of Guinea-Bissau political parties to support implementation of his programme, which includes the holding of presidential and legislative elections in 1999
Francisco Fadul is a civilian advisor to brigadier-general Ansumane Mane, who led a June revolt against the rule of Guinea-Bissau president Joao Bernardo Vieira. On November 2 in Abuja, Nigeria, Vieira and Mane agreed to resolve their differences peacefully, and on December 3 Vieira appointed Fadul as prime minister.
In a related development, an authorised source in Bissau today told Lusa that Fadul and Vieira will meet on Thursday to discuss the composition of the new government, which may be announced later this week. President Vieira will name five of its members and the Military Junta four. Lusa/end
