Guinea-Bissau: Togolese peace-keepers to meet pro-Vieira and rebel military commands
Bissau, Jan. 4 (Lusa) - The first meeting between leaders of the Togolese peace-keeping contingent and the military commands of the opposing factions in Guinea-Bissau has been scheduled for Tuesday morning.
The respective sides will discuss deployment of the Togolese peace-keepers, sent to replace troops from Guinea-Conakry and Senegal who backed President Nino Vieira during a five-month military mutiny that ended in November.
Emilio Costa, number three man in the rebel military hierarchy, will head the Military Junta delegation.
Afonso Te, deputy chief of staff of the forces supporting President Nino Vieira, is expected to head the presidential delegation. Under the terms of the Nov. 2 Abuja peace accord, the two sides agreed to form a transitional government of "national unity", accompanied by the withdrawal of foreign troops and their replacement by a West-African peace-keeping force. Guinea-Bissau: Rebel Leader Refuses New Meeting with President Vieira
Bissau, Jan. 4 (Lusa) - Guinea-Bissau's rebel Military Junta turned down at the weekend an appeal by President Nino Vieira for a new summit meeting to break the impasse over the formation of a transitional "national unity" government.
Rebel spokesman Comd. Jose Zamora Induta told Lusa Saturday that the insurgent chief, Brig. Ansumane Mane, had no plans to meet again with Vieira.
While the two sides have agreed to the composition of a transitional cabinet and designated Francisco Fadul as prime minister, the rebels insist the new government only take office after the withdrawal of Senegalese and Guinea-Conakry soldiers who back Vieira.
Under the Nov. 2 peace accord which ended a five-month military mutiny against Vieira, the foreign troops supporting the president are to leave once a West African peacekeeping force is deployed.
