STEVEN EMERSON SAYS HE "ADMIRES" KABBANI
The following is an excerpt from a January 21, 1999 speech by so-called
terrorism expert Steven Emerson:
I think the figures in the United States, or elsewhere for that matter,
I think the figures I recited before clearly show, and the testimonies
that have been given to Congress, including by Robert Blitzer, clearly
show that militant Islamic fundamentalist groups pose the greatest
threat to the United States internally and externally. And that is an
assessment that has been stated by the FBI and by CIA officials as well.
Recently, a prominent Sheik from California gave a speech at the State
Department Forum in which he unequivocally condemned Islamic terrorist
groups by name. For that transgression, he was condemned and bitterly
attacked by other "mainstream" Islamic groups as an enemy of Islam, as
"a Mossad agent," and heaven forbid, as an ally of Steve Emerson. For
the record, I have never met or spoken or communicated with Sheik Habani
(sp), but I do know that I admire his courage.
In short, we live in a world that is increasingly dangerous. The new
paradigm of terrorism is not the traditional one with a clear command
and control, a clear line of direction, or a clear political goal to
extract political concessions from the West. Rather, it is
transnational, it amorphous, it is decentralized, and inherently
religious in nature, and it defies the traditional organized crime
paradigm, although that is still used as the primary paradigm by law
enforcement to mount prosecutions.
