Salam,
I could not agree any more with you. Indeed he was a man of character and
good morals. I recall one instance which was recently broadcast by PBS on
Arab_Israel war in 1971. According to the documentary Egypt and Syria
decided to take back the occupied land from Israel and both set a date to
initiate the recovery process. They informed King Hussein about this
decision. The king showed his perfect Islamic manners. Upon learning
about the imminent attack, he flew to Tel Aviv in his personal helicopter
alone and informed the Israeli authorities of the Egyptian-Syrian plan.
Thus the king prevented the loss of life and saved his neighbors from
destruction. He was indeed following the Islamic advice that you should
always be concerned about the welfare of your neighbors. King Hussein,
indeed took care of his neighbors even at the cost of his own people or
the Palestinians. At times, his people suffered and at times his army had
to kill Palestinians to save Israeli lives. I think he deserves to be
recognized as an ideal Muslim by all of us and we in the United States
should ask our government to sponsor his statues in Washington next to
our national monument as well as in Tel Aviv. This way he will live longer
in our memories. We can ask our government to sponsor his statues in AMman
or in any other Muslim country, because Muslim people are generally
ignorant of the contributions of their leaders to secure peace for their
neighbors. May Allah bless his soul for leading an exemplary Islamic life
and saving so many innocent Israelis.
