Rosie O'Donnell's Request for Support
for Debbie Stabenow

Check this out. Here's a letter that was sent to somebody that I know (to put it kindly) who does not care one bit for Rosie O'Donnell's politics, and doesn't live in Michigan :

(my comments are centered in bold)

Dear Friend,

As a mother of three small children, I've taken on many new and exciting challenges:

I've played "whirrr ... open wide for the spinach 'copter" exactly
        9368 times.

Yeah ... I wonder if any of your
kids ever got any of that food ...
I've mastered the detection of a dirty diaper at distances greater
than twenty feet from the offender.

I won't even GO there ...
And I am perfectly, happily able to read "Goodnight Moon" backwards,
upside-down and in succesion (the mommy equivalent of auto-rewind).

... and what a FULL MOON it must be !

But nothing is more challenging, and no responsibility greater, than preparing my children for the world that awaits them beyond potty training and first grade.

As a HUSBAND and FATHER, I agree with you. And I'm
sure that your husband would agree, too. Right?

It is a responsibility I take very seriously, and the principle reason I've committed myself to the fight for a safer and brighter future for all our children.

That's great. We'd ALL like our children to be safer.
Did you know that, among children under age 10:

1,915 died in motor-vehicle accidents
489 died after getting hit by cars or trucks
805 drowned, and
738 were killed by fire or burns.
Something ought to be done about it, don't you think?
Also, if you're really interested in helping children,
here's an excellent organization : http://www.feedthechildren.org/.

One woman who shares my commitment to our children is running for the U.S. Senate this year in Michigan. Her name is Debbie Stabenow, and her race for the Senate is the one pollsters and pundits are calling the "tightest in the nation."

If successful, Debbie Stabenow will defeat a Republican incumbent who has towed-the-line for the Republican-led Congress, voting every day he's been there with Trent Lott, and worse, Jesse Helms.

So, you want to trade Spencer Abraham in for a
LIBERAL who will "tow-the-line" for the likes
of HCI and Rosie O'Donnell, right?

But her opponent, Spencer Abraham, is one of the best-funded Republican incumbents up for re-election this year, and Debbie needs our help and generosity to win this hotly competitive battle.

Did it ever ocurr to you that he is "well funded"
for a reason? Like ... maybe his constituents
actually LIKE what he's doing for them!

Additionally, shouldn't we just let the PEOPLE
of MICHIGAN decide who they want to be their
Senator? Isn't that the way it should work?

I'm supporting Debbie Stabenow, because she's willing to stand up and fight for a strong and principled position on child safety - including closing loopholes in the law that put guns in the hands of juveniles and improving the enforcement of existing laws.

How does a 'loophole' PUT guns in the hands of
juveniles? Does it REQUIRE THEM to own firearms?

Hmmm "improving the enforcement of existing laws."
Would you care to ADMIT that this stand has been
championed by the NRA for YEARS, in the form of
Project Exile? - or would you rather NOT give the
NRA any credit for their tough anti-crime stand?

It is IRONIC that people like you, who are "PRO CHOICE"
profess to be concerned about the safety of OUR CHILDREN.
On the one hand, you defend 'the choice' to literally
KILL more than 1.25 MILLION unborn children every year. One
may argue for justification in some cases, but there are
many abortions perfomed simply "for convenience". On the
other hand, you express absolute HORROR and OUTRAGE
that about 620 children (15 years old and under) die each
year in the USA due to the intentional misuse of firearms
AND accidental shootings. Is it the fact that we don't yet
KNOW these aborted children that makes it OK to kill them?

ADDITIONALLY, you try to DEMONIZE the NRA and its members
for supporting the People's right to protect themselves
and their children from criminals. THEN you hire a bodyguard
to protect YOUR family, and tell us it's OK if he is ARMED.
Is that because it's YOUR CHILD whom you want to be safe?
What about US and OUR CHILDREN, ROSIE ?! Can we be safe?

Today, firearms are a leading cause of death among American children. And yet, amazingly, there are more licensed gun dealers in the United States than there are McDonald's franchises.

Here's a true statement : Today, AMERICANS are a leading
cause of death among American children. The items listed below
are also LEADING causes of death among American children.
In fact, among children under age 10, here's how some stack up
against each other:
1,915 died in motor-vehicle accidents
489 died after getting hit by cars or trucks
  805 drowned, and
738 were killed by fire or burns.
  1.3 MILLION WERE ABORTED

42 were killed in accidental shootings

There were 138 fatal firearm accidents among children in 1996; that's 2% of all fatal accidents among children. Other accident types accounted for a MUCH greater share of fatalities among children, including:
motor vehicle : 47% drowning : 15% fires : 12% choking : 3.3%
Between 1988 and 1996, the NRA spent $100 million on firearm safety
and education programs. How much had the anti-firearm organizations
spent on safety and education "for our children"??

States that have right-to-carry handgun laws have LOWER violent crime
and homicide rates on average, compared to the rest of the country.
Right-to-carry states have a 24% lower total violent crime rate, a 19%
lower homicide rate, a 39% lower robbery rate, and a 19% lower aggravated
assault rate, on average, than the rest of the country.

Here are FACTS to back up the pro-Freedom, pro-Second Amendment,
pro-Self-Defense arguments :
Firearm Facts. Where are YOURS?

Was that McDonald's statistic a result of PERSONAL EXPERIENCE??
Is it borne out of the frustration of trying to find one late
at night? Were did you get this statistic? What does it matter?
You're using the dishonest tactic of trying to paint a mental
picture of firearms dealers distributing guns as though they
were party favors. You and I and others know that is NOT TRUE.

Ours is the only nation where access to firearms is virtually unrestricted, and we pay the price with a rate of firearm death of children nearly twelve times higher than the other 25 industrialized nations combined.

1. According to Webster's, "virtually" means "almost entirely".
'Almost entirely unrestricted'?? This is a RIDICULOUS statement
if you are referring to the LEGAL acquisition of a firearm. A dealer
MUST have a Federal Firearms License, and in some cases, STATE and
LOCAL licenses as well. They must comply with local zoning laws, and
run background checks on their customers. Purchasers must fill out a
federal form, and show proper identification. There are about 20,000
laws in the United States regarding firearms. UNRESTRICTED ACCESS??
Here's a Gun Control TimeLine.
2. The rate you quote was contrived through intellectual dishonesty.
The numbers that created that statistic were selectively choosen
to yield your desired result.
3. What matters the method? How does our nation stack up against
others in the rate of death of children, regardless of how they
died? You seem to be more concerned that their deaths resulted from
the misuse of a firearm than you are that they DIED.

Debbie Stabenow will fight to eliminate the loophole that allows adults to purchase guns at gun shows and over the Internet without having to pass a routine background check, and she supports legislation that requires the sale of child-safety locks with all new handguns.

That 'loophole' allows for PRIVATE transfers of firearms
without Big Brother's PERMISSION. Our government doesn't
like it, because if the People don't have to get permission
from the Government to transfer a firearm, the Govt. can't
REGISTER you and your firearm. This makes confiscation easy.
Confiscation can easily lead to THIS.
[Firearms Manufactured After 1898 Can ONLY Be Shipped
To Someone With A Federal Firearms License.]

Criminals don't use child-safety locks. Child safety locks
are NOT an appropriate safety measure in all cases. It may
not be ENOUGH in some cases, or TOO MUCH in others. Let the
People decide what is appropriate in THEIR HOMES.

The truth is, when it comes to the safety and security of our children, Debbie Stabenow is in a league of her own. Her commitment dates back to her 16 years in the Michigan legislature ... and continues today in the U.S. Congress.

Is that some sort of cheap plug for a movie you were in?
Cute. However, you fail to mention how many lives are SAVED
each year in the USA because an armed citizen PROTECTS themself
and/or others with a firearm. A safety lock on a handgun may
render it useless to it's adult owner -- just when they need it
the most! This legislation could be called the "The Burglar's
Safety Act". Do you want to make it SAFER for the criminals?
Firearms are used from 1 MILLION to 2.5 MILLION times each
year in the USA by law-abiding citizens to PROTECT INNOCENT LIFE.

As a Michigan State legislator:

Debbie led the effort to reform Michigan's outdated child support and visitation laws. Those reforms literally changed the lives of countless single parent families, saved taxpayers millions in welfare costs ... and made Michigan the national leader in child support enforcement.

Did it change their lives for the better? You don't say.
However, that is FINE. That is something that a State
legislator is SUPPOSED TO DO. I hope you don't advocate
that this be done on a Federal level. These sort of things
are best left to the States. The federal government is simply
NOT PERMITTED to meddle in the People's lives regarding such issues.

Debbie championed important laws for children and families that set a new national standard, including the first Children's Trust Fund for the prevention of child abuse ... the Family Support Subsidy Act to help families provide home care for their severely disabled children ... and the "Stabenow" foster care reforms, which helped give thousands of children permanent homes.

These are all noble causes. One would have to scrutinize
the effectiveness of these programs and their cost to determine
exactly how successful or unsuccessful they are. However, I
hope that Debbie does NOT plan to attempt to NATIONALIZE or
FEDERALIZE such programs. That is NOT PERMITTED under the
Constitution.

As a member of Congress, she's continued to work on issues that enhance the lives of children:

Debbie forged coalitions to help put computers in Michigan's public schools, to ensure that students would have equal access to high tech learning and the Internet.

Who paid for that? The whole country? Where in the
Constitution does it give the federal government the
authority to meddle in a State's education system? Did
she do anything ELSE, or just throw our money at the schools?

She sponsored the Children's Environmental Protection and Right-to-Know Act, which requires polluters to disclosea how the chemicals they produce and use can impact children's health.

Who paid for that? The whole country? Where in the
Constitution does it give the federal government the
authority to meddle in a State's environmental issues?

And she sponsored a new law to strengthen food safety efforts to protect kids from dangerous e-coli and other icky bacteria.

"icky bacteria" ?? PLEASE. Is that coming
from you as an EXPERT pathologist?

Now, Debbie needs our help to defeat Spencer Abraham, a Republican who has voted against the best interests of our children over and over again.

That's not fair. If he DID vote "against the best interest of
our children", it was because this business should be addressed
AT THE STATE LEVEL, not the federal level. Mr. Abraham respects
the CONSTITUTION, which protects us from the whims of the times.

The truth is, I trust Debbie Stabenow with the future safety and security of our children, and I think she'd make a terrific U.S. Senator.

Thank you for finally telling us the truth. Do you
trust her with the SAFETY and SECURITY of our NATION,
which is, after all the REAL JOB of a U.S. Senator?

But Debbie Stabenow has a distinct disadvantage in this race - the ability of her opponent to raise unlimited amounts of money from Republican special interest groups. He's even gotten support from the very gun manufacturers and chemical companies who have fought the efforts to make their products safer for kids.

SO you're trying to raise unlimited amounts of money
from the "childrens" special interest group, right?

Why do you suppose Mr. Abraham can raise a lot of money?
Could it be that the people support him? - The people who
go out, WORK, and EARN their money, that is.

And, Spencer Abraham has the backing of both the Christian Coalition and the National Rifle Association.

Since when are Christians sooo very EVIL? And how
about the NRA and its members? Are they evil, too?

You and I have a great opportunity to elect a real children's advocate to the U.S. Senate. But in order to win this race, Debbie must have funds to communicate her message to voters.

Are you sending this letter ALL OVER THE COUNTRY - to
raise funds for what SHOULD BE a LOCAL campaign? Is this
what you're doing? Do you think that's right, or do you
support Mr. Keyes' position that only those who may
actually VOTE for a candidate may contribute to their
political campaign?

So please join me in supporting Debbie Stabenow's important bid for the Senate by making a contribution of $25, $50 or whatever you can afford to her campaign today. Help make a difference for our kids.

This campaign SHOULD NOT be funded at a federal level.
The rest of the country has NO RIGHT to elect a Senator
from Michigan.

Sincerely,

Is that POSSIBLE?

Rosie O'Donnell
