Henry Gloval is the kind, calm and thoughtful Captain of the SDF-1. He cares a lot for the men and women who work under them, and is cautious about risking their lives.
Captain Gloval was among the first to visit the SDF-1 after it crashed on Macross Island. Later he was assigned as Captain of the vessel, a job he takes seriously.
He is obviously Russian from his accent and (if Sammie doesn't remind him not to) likes to smoke his pipe to calm him down in times of stress.
It was Gloval who after lot's of consideration ordered the spacefold, and even when it turned into a disaster Captain Gloval remained calm. Immediately ordering a salvage and rescue operation, the first to get any material still usuable from the misplace Macross Island, and the second to get the people trapped in the shelters onto the ship.
From there he ordered that the SDF-1 begin the voyage back to Earth. On the way the SDF-1 is attacked many times by the aliens. The first time is when Gloval orders the modular transformation only when it becomes evident there is no other way to beat the aliens. He is hestiate to do anything that will endanger the lives of the citzens of Macross Island.
Captain Gloval also planned a sneak attack on the Zentraedi when the SDF-1 reached Saturn, however the plan almost backfired, but Lt. Commander Hayes saved the ship from distruction or capture.
On Mars' surface it was Gloval who came up with the idea to blow up Mars Base Sara in order to free the ship from gravity mines planted by Khryon.
Gloval also ordered the recon mission that ended up with the capture of Lisa Hayes, Rick Hunter, Ben Dixon and Max Sterling. He was also the only one who took the four seriously when they gave their report.
It was through Gloval's daring move that the SDF-1 got back to Earth at all, when he broke through the aliens barrier.
It soon becomes evident that their troubles are not over, so he and Lisa Hayes go to Alaske Base to plea for the Macross citizens release.
Gloval tells Lisa that he was once friends with her father, Admiral Nicholas Hayes, but the friendship ended when the Grand Cannon Operation begun, which Gloval was against. Gloval is further disillusioned when the Earth Government, which includes Hayes turns down his request for the citizens to leave the ship.
Later he orders the SDF-1 airborne and sends out requests to automonous governments to take on the Macross refugees. This is accepted by the Ontario Quadrant, but an accident had the decision reversed and the SDF-1 bannished from Earth.
Gloval is among the first to make a move towards peace with the Zentraedi by accepting the defectors request for asylum. He later allows Lisa Hayes to return to Earth with the evidence that humans and Zentraedi are the same.
In the final battle with the Zentraedi Gloval and Exedore are on the bridge of the SDF-1 to guide it through the battle.
After the battle Gloval is promoted to Admiral.
Together he and Breetai come up with the plan to recapture the satillite. Later Gloval and the rest must come up with a plan to rescue Minmei from Khryon without giving up the SDF-1.
Towards the end of the series Gloval plans a mission to the home of the Robotech Masters to sue for peace using the human built SDF-2.
