When it comes to piloting a Veritech Max Sterling is the best of them, seemingly come out of nowhere he took the RDF by storm, soon becoming known as the best pilot to ever step in a Veritech.
Most people didn't realise this because of Max's layed back personality, he's not the type to brag, he's quiet, reserved, but is quite confident of his abilties when he's fighting.
As well as been an ace in the cockpit, he is also excellent at hand to hand combat. This is because of his super fast reflexes that help him pilot so well.
We meet Max after Rick Hunter's premotion to Lieutenant, he is long time friends with Ben Dixion. The three all end up at Minmei's birthday party, then in battle with the new Vermillion team when Khyron attacks. It is during this battle Max reveals his skills pulling amazing manoveers in Battloid mode that no battlepod can top, he shoots down 9 pods.
Max flies a blue Veritech unlike any other in the RDF, it also seems that he frequently maintainaces himself, and has probably added somthings onto it that other Veritechs don't have. Aside frm the Skull 001 it is (for a time) the most recgonisable of veritechs.
Max is the one who rescues Rick, Lisa and Ben from the Zentraedi after they are all captured. Max is presumed dead after Breetai pushes his mecha out into space through a hole in the ship. Max however manages to grap onto the outside of the ship and get back inside. He is promoted for his bravery along with the others.
It is the amazing abilty that has Max singled out by Miriya Parina the Best pilot of the Zentraedi Air Force. So intrigued by Max's reputation she makes an unathorised attack on the SDF-1 to draw hime out. Max does not disappoint and they engage in a spectular dog fight, which ends up in the streets of Macross City, where Max corners Miriya and prepares for a point-blank shoot out. Miriya's objective though is to kill Max and be alive so she retreats through an air lock tha is opened above her. Max pursues but is then ordered to retreat.
It doesn't end there, unknown to Max, Miriya is desperate for revenge, so desperate she micronises herself and infiltrates the SDf-1 to hunt him down.
By a weird twist of fate though when Max first sees her outside the Macross Theatre when Minmei's movie is interrupted he falls in love with her!
From then on in he is obsessed with finding her, as she is with him, for a different reason of course, she wants to kill him , he wants a date.
This becomes a reality, when after taking Rick to the arcade to cheer him up, he finds Miriya playing a game Veritechs! Which he challenges a game with her. After creaming her on level B, they go to level A and in a thrilling reinactment of their first battle Max defeats her, revealing who he is. Miriya tries to run off, but Max won't let her go unit she agrees to a date, which she does. Whenthe date arrives though Max is shocked when Miriya comes baring down on him with a knife! Which she throws straight at his head, he avoids it, but she has another knife and preceeds to fight him to the death. Max gets the first knife and disarms her, wining for a third and final time, rather then killing her though, he proposes marriage. Miriya accepts, and after Max introduces her to Rick (who is VERY impressed with her) they have a lavish wedding, that is broadcasted to the Zentraedi. The Zentraedi attack, but the humans win when Miriya reveals to Max a vunearble spot in the battlepods armor.
Max and Miriya are a very happy couple (even if Miriya can't cook) and they fly together also. Miriya is issued a special red veritech that matches Max's blue one.
Max and Miriya are among those who meet the micronised Minster Exedore and are informed of the Imperial Fleets coming to distroy the Earth, the SDf-1 and all infected Zentraedi. During this battle the two are an unstoppabe force working together.
After this last battle with the Imperial Fleet Max and Miriya have a child, called Dana, who later becames the vocal point of the plan to recapture the factory satillite.
Max and Miriya continue to fly and fight together, especially during Khryon and Azonia's attacks.
The two survive the last battle along with Dana and as is revealed later go on the SDF-3 mission of peace to Tirol. Although they leave Dana behind for reasons unknown.
