Lynn Minmei is by far the most immature, annoying, and whiny character on Robotech, except for maybe Kyle, who in my opinion takes the cake for horrible character of the year.
We firse meet Minmei on Macross Island, looking after her cousin Jason, and trying to prevent him from getting can of soda. Minmei immediately captures Rick's eye and he seems to fall instantly in love with her.
Minmei and Jason are the first to see the huge Battloid mode of the Veritech fighter after Rick crashes into buildings near her Aunt and Uncle's resturant. She and Jason are also almost crushed by the Battloid, that Rick is having a hard time steering until Roy Fokker shows up. As soon as Rick's Battloid is fixed and he has a feel for the Battloid Minmei and all the Macross citizen are evacuated to shelters.
In a real act of total stupidity Minmei raced back into battle-torn Macross, to retrieve her DIARY no less. She actually thought in the middle of a war someone would find it and READ it. Needless to say she almost go herself killed, if it wasn't for Rick and Roy who rescued her from the foot of a huge battle pod. Rick then picked her up in the hand of his Guardian veritech and flew away from Macross. However they were pursued and the arm was shot off sending Minmei falling towards her death. Rick managed to rescue her though, but when he landed the Guardian Rick ran into a pod flipping the plane and knocking Minmei unconcious. Once again they were saved by Roy Fokker, and soon the three of them were heading for the SDF-1 up in Earth's orbit. Minmei of course wanted to return to the island, and an infatuated Rick offered to do so. When Roy left Rick and her near an airlock along with Rick's stunt plane, Rick tried to fly her back. They got caught up in the spacefold along with Macross Island, and ended up in space. Through some tricky manoveering Rick got them back inside the SDF-1, the only problem was it was a long forgotten floor. Minmei was little help to Rick during the twelve days down there, although she could cook and did operate the airlock for Rick. She also told Rick a lot about herself, including the fact she wanted to be a singing since she was four. Soon Minmei begins to lose hope that they will ever be rescued, her other dream to be a bride has Rick deciding that they should pretend to get married. Before they can though, they are rescued and Minmei becomes an insensitive brat once more.
She ignores Rick's feelings for her and concentrates on herself, although it is Minmei who talks Rick into entering the military, and to her credit she did help get Macross life settled into a normal pattern by the suggestion of reopening the 'White Dragon' resturant of Max and Lena's.
Just before the first transformation Rick and Minmei are arguing, they have just sworn that they hate each other when the transformation begins. Minmei falls into a crack and almost falls to the ground, but Rick rescues her, but she still doesn't seem to take him seriously.
Things only get worse, on the evening before Rick's misson she acts as if the battle he is going into is only a game, and is more concerned about her new dress than Rick.
Later on when she is celebrating her 16th birthday she actually tells off Rick as he races to a taxi after a red alert is sounded, and insists upon recieving a gift from him. He gives her the Tatanium Medal of Valour he won for actions on Mars, although Minmei hardly seems all that appericative of it's signifacance, though she thinks it's a nice gift.
Minmei is then entered in the Miss Macross Pagent, depite Rick telling her he's not too comfortable with her doing so. It's good to go for what you want, but she could have at least have listened to him.
So, Minmei goes up against 25 of the most beautiful girls of Macross, including movie star Jan Morris. Morris is even WORSE then Minmei, so it's probably better Minmei won.
As Rick predicted though Minmei has no time for him, preparing busily for her career as a singer. Unfortunately she probably should have hired a song writer, most of her songs are just annoying, although it would have helped if she hadn't song the same song over and over and over.
Minmei is soon given a television show and a part in a movie, but she needs a co-star for the movie and there doesn't seem to be anyone.
The SDF-1 has return to Earth by now, and because of her celebrity status Minmei gets to go to Yokohama to see her parents. Her parents though refuse to allow her to return, this angers her, until her cousin Kyle steps in and offers to be her guardian. Minmei likes Kyle like a brother, so is happy to have him as her co-star in the movie 'Small White Dragon.'
Minmei does have one commendable preformance when the SDF-1 is banished from Earth, she gives a rather stirring speech that brings up morale.
Minmei's movie 'Small White Dragon' is a hit, and in it there is a stage kiss between her and Kyle
Minmei though is horrified when Kyle kisses her during a Zentraedi evasion of Macross City inside the ship, and further shocked when Kyle tells Macross reporters he's thought about purposing to her!
It's Exedore who reveals to everyone onf the SDF-1 a strange thing, the Zentraedis see Minmei and her songs as some sort of psychological attack. Though she isn't, this gives Rick and idea to us Minmei's song to distract the Zentraedi during the battle with the Imperial fleet. This is a success and the fleet is defeated and the SDF-1 safe.
In the two years of reconstrucion Minmei and Kyle tour the surviving towns of the Great Zentraedi Burn, giving benefit concerts. Minmei seems to have mature some, but Kyle is just plain cruel, he is obviously an alcoholic. He is also out to get the military most specifically Ricka and to Minmei's disgust tries to drag Rick down whenever their paths cross.
It is now, when Rick and Lisa are becoming close that Minmei decides she loves Rick! And goes after him to, although she's kidnapped beofre she can do much. Rick rescues her and they are reunited, Minmei disappears, the reappears on the day Rick has a date with Lisa. Rick choosen to go out wither her, she'll only be in town one day, and blow off Lisa. the converstation is stilted at best as soon Kyle shows up and drags Minmei away. So upset is Minmei, that she quits singing, and then Kyle dumps her. She goes to Rick house and he takes her in, but Minmei is now clinging and pocessive, wanting Rick to quit the military so she never has to risk losing him. Rick though dosen't seem convinced, and it's obvious Minmei doesn't quite have the same hold over him as she did in the beginning.
