Statement of Solidarity with the People's Struggle in
East Timor Joint
Statement THE REIGN of terror remains in the tension-filled East Timor. As the East Timorese march to freedom from decades-long colonial subjugation, pro-Indonesia militias continue to sow fear, harass, beat up, and massacre pro-independence groups. The bloodbath perpetuated by the Indonesian army-backed militias last August 26, where six people died and scores were injured, illustrates the desperate attempt of the Indonesian authority to hold on to its colonial oppression of East Timor. We condemn the terroristic and barbaric acts of the pro-Indonesia militias to suppress the struggle for freedom of the people. We condemn the Indonesian government for sanctioning and supporting these fascist attacks against the people of East Timor. The struggle for East Timor liberation is a just struggle of the people. The long years of colonial rule - first by Portugal, then by Indonesia - in East Timor, has wantonly plundered the nation to serve the interests of the Portuguese and Indonesian elite. The natural resources-rich East Timor has suffered the brunt of the fascist Suharto government who, since the start, ruled East Timor with an iron hand. Although Suharto has stepped down in the face of the formidable strength of the people, the Indonesian government has stepped up its military operations against East Timorese in connivance with their hired thugs. The systematic repression aimed to intimidate the East Timorese into submitting to a yoke of slavery forced upon them by the colonizers. We demand justice for the victims of suppression and violent repression of the Indonesian military and pro-Indonesia militias. We demand that the terror being spread by these militias be immediately stopped. The reign of fascism must stop! We support the struggle for liberation and democracy of the East Timorese and we will standby with our East Timorese comrades until total victory against their colonial oppressors is achieved. Viva Timor Leste! Justice for the victims of military fascism! Freedom for East Timor! Asian Students
