As Erap Keeps Mum on Youth & Student Issues Students Vow to Keep Up Protest Actions

Press Statement
July 21, 1998

Undoubtedly, President Joseph 'Erap' Estrada has already exposed himself and has shed his populist image to the Filipino masses. As he delivers his first State of the Nation Address, the Filipinos will not be deceived by his so-called pro-people and pro-poor policies.

Contrary to the image that he projects, his loyalty to the policies started by his predecessors will only mean the further oppression and exploitation of the people.

Ominously enough, he started his administration with his highly-criticized support to the burial of the former dictator Ferdinand Marcos. This was followed by his moves to 'fatten up' once again the cronies and loyalists who benefited much from the Marcos regime. At present, his avowed agreement to the Visiting Forces Agreement is glaring proof of the new regime\'92s rabid pro-imperialist character.

The youth and students are very much alarmed at the President Estrada's inaction to the demand of the students to immediately rollback tuition fee increases, stop all forms of campus repression, repeal Section 42 of Education Act of 1982, and to stop the commercialization and privatization of state colleges and universities. His lengthy silence on the issues and demands which the youth and students has presented to him can only mean that the students indeed has no hope, whatsoever, on the present government.

The League of Filipino Students (LFS) vows to rally the Filipino students to go out of the streets to once again to reiterate the situation and demands of the student sector. Moreover, we are going to unite with the Filipino masses in denouncing the administration's anti-people programs and policies.

President Estrada has already exposed himself as anti-people and anti-poor. And the people has no further recourse but to fight back.
