The following are the books that I used in actually putting this class together.
Anderson, D. Calligraphy: The Art of Written Forms. Dover. New York:1992. See main bibliography, linked below, for a review of the book.

Cipango." In Circa 1492: Art in the Age of Exploration. J. Levenson, ed. National
Gallery of Art. Washington, DC: 1991 Very large exhibition catalogue featuring applied art from
around the world at the time of Columbus' historic journey.
Diringer, D. The Book Before Printing: Ancient, Medieval, and Oriental. Dover. New York:1982 See main bibliography.
Gaur, A. A History of Writing. Revised edition. Cross River Press. New York:1992. See main bibliography.
Giuganino, A. & A. Tamburello. National Museum Tokyo.

frequently in used book stores.

Museum. Revised edition. F. Francis, ed. Thames & Hudson. London:1975. Short, popular
survey on the holdings.
Mayhall, Y. The Art of Sumi-e Painting. M. Grumbacher, Inc.
New York:1976. Very short instructional book on Japanese ink painting (Sumi-e is Japanese for
"ink painting."). The author has a more recent work called The Sumi-e Book, which is
also quite nice.

Popular,
inexpensive survey of Japanese art.
Sung, P. Mei-hua hsi-shen-p'u. 1238. Facsimile with translation:

Francisco:1995. This is the earliest known printed book of art instruction; Chinese poetry and
woodcuts on painting plum blossoms.
Ting, F. Chinese Painting. Dover. New York:1991. Modestly
priced book on Chinese ink painting.
