On Awards for the Japanese Persona

There are many good books on Japanese calligraphy and sumi-e painting. A search of Amazon.com produced in excess of 350 books for the searches "Japanese calligraphy," "sumi-e," "Chinese calligraphy," and "Chinese painting." Try these, as well as searches for "Korean calligraphy" and "Korean art," through the Amazon.com link below, but as I have not sampled most of the books contained therein, I can speak neither ill not good of them.

The following are the books that I used in actually putting this class together.

Mayhall, Y. The Art of Sumi-e Painting. M. Grumbacher, Inc. New York:1976. Very short instructional book on Japanese ink painting (Sumi-e is Japanese for "ink painting."). The author has a more recent work called The Sumi-e Book, which is also quite nice.

Stanley-Baker, J. Japanese Art. Thames &Hudson. London:1984. Popular, inexpensive survey of Japanese art.

Sung, P. Mei-hua hsi-shen-p'u. 1238. Facsimile with translation: Guide to Capturing a Plum Blossom. R. Pine, Translator. Mercury House. San Francisco:1995. This is the earliest known printed book of art instruction; Chinese poetry and woodcuts on painting plum blossoms.

Ting, F. Chinese Painting. Dover. New York:1991. Modestly priced book on Chinese ink painting.
