Amposta, 28th February 2000

To the Personnel Manager of EFL Schools and/or EFL ESL Publishers.

Kindly allow me a few minutes of your valuable time to introduce myself. My name is Juan Manuel Díez Clivillé. I have been a teacher for 16 years at various secondary schools in Spain. I quite like my job, and I am always looking for new and exciting ways to motivate my students. Let me add that I love experimenting with new topics, activities and techniques all the time.

I have devised a good number of teaching ideas and lesson plans, which have been published in several teachers´ magazines and journals in Spain and abroad, as well as at different sites over the www. To this day, I have won 4 awards for my work, and I am constantly working on new –and hopefully, better- educational materials.

Now and again, I have been involved with teacher training activities, such as lectures, presentations, workshops and personal counselling. Obviously, I do my best to stay informed of current events and developments in the TEFL field.

I would be most interested in working with a panel of authors/editors producing EFL ESL materials, books or whatever, at home (via email, NetMeeting & ICQ) or anywhere in Europe or the USA. I will also consider job openings in other countries, as well as teaching positions.

I can deal with most general interest topics at any level to suit the needs of our pupils these days. I have some ideas for the Internet and/or educational CD-ROMs as well. I am particularly fond of short monographic courses (30-35 hours), such as required by the current Spanish educational system and have developed a number of projects to that end.

I am not sending any specific project proposals for the time being, but I would be delighted to hear about your present interests and needs and I am ready to discuss the issue at length with you, with a view to produce exactly what you have in mind.

If you are looking for someone with the drive and creative powers required to produce fresh and effective out-of-the-beaten-track teaching materials and/or an easy-going educator/consultant/speaker with a teaching style of his own, I really look forward to hearing from you soon.

Thanks for your time and attention!

Yours sincerely,

Juan Manuel Díez Clivillé

About my works:

Please note that my teaching activities vary a lot in content, length and style. The following selection should give you an idea of the sort of things I have done so far. See how you like them…

An American in Spain The stds. sort out a reporter’s notes on various parts of the country.

But…Where Are YOU? How about making a picture dictionary…or even an encyclopaedia?

Christmas Shopping Turn your classroom into a Department Store within minutes!

Crime and Punishment Crimes, misdemeanours and other stories. A project on the goodies and the baddies.

Girls (first version) The basis for the Girls Internet Project, it consists of some very colourful Word files.

Girls-The Lesson (written to supplement both the above and the Internet version

of the project) Here you will find a few suggestions on how to exploit the project in class and a list of questions intended to encourage conversation on various topics.

Happy School Year! The stds. get a strange letter from the teachers in their school’s English Department.

Market Day Why not have a lesson at your local market?

Me and Mr Platt An interesting character visits your school. Most fun! You may wish to check an article in Spanish about this project (I know you’ll love the pics!)

On Duty! Several people (a burglar included) want to get into Buckingham Palace for different reasons…

Oudoutra, King of the Naiss Something unexpected happens when your stds. are stranded…in the heart of Africa.

Project: The EEC Make a pack of cards and have the European Union at your fingertips!

Sherlock Holmes and the Mad Word Collectors An activity for vocabulary revision on multiple semantic fields.

The Boat Race Who’ll win this year? Cambridge? Oxford? Make your bets!

The Pharaoh and His Queen (Mr & Mrs Pharaoh) Test your stds.´ knowledge of Ancient Egypt while they get inside a pyramid and explore its funeral chamber.

Tom, Bob and Christine Too Following some instructions, the stds. eventually produce a most peculiar comic strip…with a moral to it.

Verbs Curse Oh, those irregular verbs! Here’s a final solution to solve the problem.

What a Story! Story writing made easy.

I have also devised a good number of board games, puzzles and quizzes of various kinds.

My latest works:

These have just been submitted to different EFL teachers´ competitions and are not available for evaluation at this time.

A Jolly Good Bunch This one deals with great personalities of all times and from all walks of life.

Dope? Nope!!! A project on Rock Music, Drug Abuse and Other Related Issues.

Future projects include:

The development of interactive materials for the Internet and CD-ROMs.

A project on health, well being, common illnesses and general medical issues.

A project on Ancient Greece (Cultural Aspects)

A project on Philosophy and Religion explained to teenagers.

A resource book with plenty of games and quizzes for beginners and stds. at elementary level.

Oh, and I definitely have to produce something on cars and football. I will, sometime.

Of course, I am open to any proposals from you!

Desired salary range: This may vary a lot according to the circumstances e.g. the type of work to be done and the place where it is to be done…working from home, assignment on demand, working abroad etc. It is, of course, negotiable, but for a full-time job in Barcelona or Madrid, for instance, I expect to make between 350.000-400.000 PTAs. a month, after taxes.

Once again, many thanks for your time and consideration.
