Prologue
1993, Winnipeg, a dark alley, 1 am
"Vampires!" Sammi shrieked.
"It's a vampire, not vampires. I'm by myself, little one." The vampire smiled, sending chills through Sammi's back.
"Please don't suck my blood!" Sammi begged and went down on her knees. "I'm still too young to die!"
"I didn't say I'm gonna drink your blood, did I?" The vampire was unexpectedly friendly. "And I don't drink good people's blood, don't worry, kid."
"Are you serious?" Sammi whispered in disbelief. "You mean, you won't kill me? You'll let me go?"
"Yes, little one. I have no intention to feed from your blood, much lesser take away your life. And by the way, I'm not hungry right now. I'm just wandering around." The vampire said. "So you need not fear me, my dear."
"Why......why are you so friendly?" Sammi took a deep breath then asked. "I thought vampires are all evil creatures who suck the blood dry of everybody in sight!"
"Because I'm a good vampire, lucky you, huh?" The vampire grinned.
"There are good vampires in the world? I thought they're all bad!" Sammi exclaimed, big eyes blinking with interest. Her fear for the vampire slowly fading away.
"Aren't I the perfect example?" The vampire laughed softly. "Anyway, it's very dangerous for a young girl your age to be wandering about on the streets all by yourself, especially at this late hour. Go home now, sweetie. Not all of the Creatures Of The Night are as friendly as I am."
"Creatures Of The Night?"
"Ghosts, vampires, zombies, goblins, harpies, demons, devils, ogres, ghouls and fiends......need anymore examples?" The vampire grinned.
"Uh...no thanks. I guess I'd better get going now." Sammi swallowed. A vampire was enough of a scare, she would not want to meet any of those creatures!
Sammi left the alley quickly. She turned and looked over her shoulder before the alley went out of sight, and found the vampire watching her leave. She hesitated for a second then ran towards home in her full speed.
"Where d'ya runnin' to so fast, honey?"
Sammi stopped short when a dark shadow appeared in front of her out of nowhere, blocking her way home. It materialized into a transparent human-shaped shadowy figure with two ugly yellow eyes glowing evilly on his shadowy cloud of a face. All his other features were unclear. Sammi screamed in fear and panick.
"Keep your dirty hands off her, Night-pal."
Sammi turned to see the vampire she'd met earlier in the alley standing behind her, his face like a thundercloud. The friendly expression he'd used on her before was gone without a trace. Sammi shivered as she met the vampire's icy gaze. The sapphire blue crystals that were the vampire's intriguing eyes had condensed into solid ice crystals that threatened to freeze the whole entire universe with its gaze.
"Hey, I saw her first, Bloody-mouth!" The demon protested, but his voice showed fear of the more powerful creature in front of him.
The vampire's eyes glowed blood-red all of a sudden. Sammi felt a surge of pressure in the air. The demon screamed in agony and disappeared. Everything was back to silence once more.
"What......what happened?" Sammi's eyes widened.
"I......terminated his existence." The vampire hesitated before he replied, his expression softened once more. "Or, if you put it in human terms, I killed him."
"You what?" Sammi asked in disbelief.
"I killed him." The vampire repeated.
"Why would you do that? I......I thought......you two are both those......those......Creatures Of The Night!" Sammi stared at him with curiosity.
"He was about to......possess you." Once again, the vampire struggled with words. "It was the only way to stop him. He won't give up until he's seen me drained your blood dry or he's accomplished his goal."
Sammi shivered, "Why did you save me? And......why didn't you drink my blood like other vampires would do?"
"I told you, I'm a good vampire." The vampire grinned.
"Uh......thanks." Sammi smiled. "I mean, for saving me, and not drinking my blood and all."
"No problem." The vampire nodded. "Would you like me to escort you home? There are too many creatures out there in the dark as it is."
"Sure! By the way, what's your name? I mean, do you have a name?"
"Of course I have a name." The vampire chuckled. "It's Varien. And yours?"
"Sammi. Sammi Firefly." Sammi grinned, her fear for the blood-sucking creature in front of her faded out of existence. "But everybody who knows me calls me Firefly."
