Literature from Aotearoa/New Zealand

     Aotearoa is the Maori (pronounced "mau-ree")name of the island known to most of the West 
as New Zealand. The Maori are the indigenous people of Aotearoa, a people whose history long

The texts listed on this page are mostly from Maori writers currently writing in English.
The earliest published novel is Witi Ihimaera's Tongi, published in '73. Since then, many
Maori authors have joined Mr. Ihimaera in publishing both novels and poetry. Included in this
group are fictionists and poets like Patricia Grace, Keri Hulme and others. Works from each
