Ok, lets start at the beginning...If you use the web at all, you have seen a banner advertisement. Banner ads are the way that companies advertise their wares and sites on the internet. These banner ads appear on most pages, some are animated, some are static, but all are useful to you, the webmaster. For clarity sake, I will define "webmaster" as someone who owns and maintains their own web page on the internet. I am the webmaster for this site. As webmaster, I had to decide what the content of my site would be. Once that was accomplished, I had to find ways to advertise my site so that you would know where to find it.
In the same way that I advertised my site, other people advertise theirs. However, I only use free ways to advertise mine, therefore I am not paying out any overhead for advertisement. Most companies on the web must pay to advertise their site, just like companies have to pay television networks to air their commercials. Basically, what I am telling you to do is to get a chunk of their advertising dollar by hosting their banner ad on your site. Each banner ad that appears on my site pays me to host it. You see, companies will pay you to let them put an advertisement on your site. Each company is different, some pay more than others. Some companies pay you for each time someone clicks on their advertisement. Some pay for impressions, which means that they pay you for each time the ad is shown on your page. Some pay you
commissions for anything that is purchased from them when a person clicks on the ad from your site. At any rate, YOU GET PAID! This is why I ask you to click on my banners when you visit my site, I get paid for every click through. Since I am showing you what I do for free I hope that you will help me earn a buck too!
There are hundreds of companies which pay you to host their ads. These are the best that I have found so far, although I am constantly checking on new leads. This site will show more new advertisers as they become available. If you want to start adding advertisements to your site, please check out their reputations first.
The following is a simplified list of what to do to get sponsors:
1) Get a web page that allows sponsorship banners. It doesn't matter what your site is, as long as you have one. However, try to make it something informational, that people will want to see. If your site is like everyone else's, nobody will come.
2) Once you have a site up and running, the easiest way to get started is to come back here and click on my ads. I know this sounds like shameless promotion, but it really isn't. I learned how to do this from another site too. The reason I'm telling you to start here is that everything is at your fingertips. You can find enough ads here to get started and it won't take long to do. However, if you do not wish to take this route, you have to search the web. A good place to start is at a search engine, looking for commercial sites. Which ever way
you decide to go is fine.
3) The next step is to visit the prospective advertisers site. Look around. What does the site offer customers? Is it easy to use? Does it make outrageous promises? Does it look professional? Use your
head. If it looks like a company that you would trust to do business with, go for it.
4) Next go to the area of the site that gives the details of their ad program. READ THIS CAREFULLY!!! If they are asking for money, are unclear about any details regarding payment, are offering outrageous
promises, or refuse to give a real address or contact site, STAY CLEAR OF THEM!!! Legitimate companies will make very clear what they offer and what they expect!! They will also give you an address
and phone number for any problems or questions. Keep this in mind while you decide whether or not to apply for an ad!
5) After you have checked out the site and read the ad agreement, the next step is to apply to their affiliates program. An affiliate is just a fancy way to say that you are willing to host their ad on your site. Some companies ask you to fill out an application, some don't. Some will check your site for content and substance before they agree to give you a banner.
6) After you apply as an affiliate, one of two things will happen. The first is that your application is put on hold until the company checks out your site for content. They will then email you, usually within 48 hrs, telling you whether or not your site has been accepted. The second is that you will be immediately approved.
7) When you are approved for affiliate status, you will then be given instructions on how to put the banner ad on your web page. If you were immediately approved, there will be a small amount of html that you have to copy and paste to your web page. The site will give you instructions on how to do this. If you were confirmed by email, they will either send you the html to copy and paste, or send a link where you must go to get it.
8) After you get the html, put in on your page. My suggestion is to put the highest paying ads at the top, because they get more hits. Do not place too many on each page, because it slows down loading time
and people may get fed up and hit the "back" button.
That is all you need to do to put an ad on you page. These advertising methods cost you NOTHING but your time! And believe me, the most time you will spend is in the first couple of weeks, getting your site up and running and doing the submissions. After that all you need to do is keep track of how much money you are making, and make sure your site stays current. Do this by adding new material every once in awhile to make sure people have a reason to come back!
