In January, belive it or not, we had 740 students attempt some very difficult problems. The program seems to be growing exponentially. As in the previous months, Presque Isle had the most number of students submitting problems. In our eyes, this indicates the school has a very strong mathematics program. Although the January problems were difficult, two students got 95 points out of 100. A score this high on problems this difficult would undoubtedly rank these individuals in the top one-tenth of one percent nationwide. It will be interesting to watch the careers of these students as they develop even further in college and beyond. We have also seen students, who although started slow, have begun to develop acute minds over the past four months. A penetrating mind is something that can never be taken away from you. We urge you to continue with the persistence you have shown over the past four months. You won't regret it.
We now have a message board near the bottom of the home page where you can have running mathematical conversations with other students in the state of Maine. We don't want to use this message board as a place to give away and ask solutions to the monthly problems, but as a place to discuss mathematics in general. We would like to know the kinds of ideas that are floating around in the minds of the brightest students in Maine. Maybe some of the students who have received the highest scores can tell others how they attack problems and some of the secrets of their success.
