Story ran on Sunday, March 11, 2001 For the young Missouri softball team it was yet another lesson in growing up.After splitting a double-header Friday to weaker teams, the Tigers showed signs of maturity by finishing off its weaker opposition instead of letting them stay close. Missouri made it look, beating Indiana State and Tennessee-Martin 5-1 and 15-0, respectively, yesterday in the Missouri Round Robin. Against Indiana State in Game 1, sophomore Melanie Fisher’s 3-for-4, two RBI effort paced the Tigers (9-14). Fisher added two more hits - including a near home run - and another RBI in Game 2 against the Skyhawks. "I just found a way to hit the ball in play all day today," said Fisher, who upped her batting averaged to .385. "I was disappointed that the first time I was at bat" against UTM "it didn’t go over. The wind got it good and brought it back into fair territory. But I think we all hit the ball solidly as a team, and it was exciting to play like the way we know how." All but one Tiger batter had a hit against the Skyhawks, and all but two got a hit against Indiana State (4-10). Missouri pitcher Stephanie Falk recorded her second shutout of the season in Game 2, striking out three, walking only one and allowing two hits. "I think that’s what we needed," said Falk, now 7-8 this season. "We needed to come out and put away a team. We have come out early this year, got runs in the first couple of innings and then we kind of have fallen from there. So it’s nice to come out inning after inning and just keep putting runs on the board." Game 2 became a laugher quickly. The Tigers scored four runs in each of the first three innings and added three more in the fourth to humiliate the Skyhawks (1-19). "It’s always nice to drive in some runs," MU coach Jay Miller said. "More important, we got good defensive performance in both games and great pitching. So hopefully we put everything together today. Now we want to look at consistency. Can we do this day in and day out and keep moving forward instead of taking a step backwards? "It’s a matter of growing up a little bit. We’re a young team, and we have to mature. We have to get better. There’s going to be inconsistency when you’re young." The Tigers have a chance to avenge Friday’s disappointing 6-4 tournament loss to Big 12 foe Iowa State (7-7) tomorrow in the final day of the Round Robin. Missouri later plays Indiana State again in the tournament finale at 4 p.m. "We want to come out and beat Iowa State, we own them a big one," said MU centerfielder Karen Williams. "We’re going to come out on fire, I’m pretty sure."
