Story ran on Monday, March 12, 2001 The Missouri softball team rallied from a three-run deficit to knock off conference foe Iowa State 6-5 yesterday to win its fourth straight game in the Missouri Round Robin.Iowa State, however, won the tournament title by virtue of its two-run win over Missouri on Friday. Although MU left 12 runners on base and could have scored more runs, the Tigers spirits weren’t dampened. "I was actually glad that we were down and able to come back because that feels better than actually staying up the whole game," said Tiger centerfielder Karen Williams, who went 4 for 5 against ISU. "That gave us an extra boost coming into the second game." That final game was postponed until next Monday, with the Tigers leading Indiana State 8-1 in the bottom of the fourth. The game was called due to darkness. Missouri used a four-run fifth inning to upend the Cyclones. Five straight hits did the damage. Tiger pitcher Stephanie Falk blasted a two-RBI double off the top of the wall in the inning. Falk also got the victory. "It kind of feels like you’re a full player that way and I’m glad it’s working out for me," said Falk, who relieved struggling Ingrid Werner in the third inning. "My main goal is pitching, so when I contribute at the bat it’s even sweeter." Iowa State (8-8) capitalized on the five Tiger errors in Friday’s win. But it was Missouri (11-14) that took advantage of defensive mistakes yesterday. "I was most disappointed on how they scored their last run," ISU coach Ruth Crowe said. "They scored on an error on a ball that went back to my pitcher. The game could have still been 5-5." Williams’ infield single, which was bobbled by Cyclone pitcher Jen Bice, was not ruled an error, but it did score Lindsey Jacoby from third base with the go-ahead run. Mary McGrane had a strong performance going 3 for 3. Jacoby went 2 for 4 with an RBI and Erin Erickson went 3 for 4 and scored one run for the Tigers. "We started to string some hits together from kids who have been struggling," said coach Jay Miller. "We feel we’re on a little bit of a roll now and obviously we want to keep that going."
Gymnastics For the second time this year Iowa State posted a season-high score to defeat the Tigers. The Cyclones produced a new school record and beat MU 197.300-193.250 yesterday in Ames, Iowa. Ann Gietler tied a career-best with her 9.875 effort and finished in a three-way tie for second place on bars. The Tigers also scored the sixth highest bars total in school history. Sophomore Leah Gremaud equaled her own MU-third best score of 9.900 and taking second place. The loss drops the Tigers to 4-10 overall and 0-5 in the Big 12. |
