LABORATORY SAFETY
For All Microbiology Laboratory Sessions
Although none of the microbiology lab sessions (Labs 1,2,3,4,and 7) involve pathogens (microorganisms known to cause disease), all microorganisms should be handled in accordance with good safe laboratory technique. The following rules apply to individual and group safety, and are requirements for all microbiology laboratory sessions. Any one who does not follow these rules will be asked to leave the lab and will receive a zero as a grade for that lab.

If you respect the "bugs", the "bugs" will respect you!

All students will:

1. Report all spills and broken glassware to the instructor and receive instructions for clean up.

2. Wash hands before and after laboratories and at any time contamination is suspected.

3. Never eat or drink in the laboratory.

4. Disinfect lab benches prior to and at the conclusion of each lab session and dispose of all contaminated materials as instructed.

5. Never apply cosmetics, handle contact lenses, or place objects (fingers, pencils, etc.) in the mouth or touch your face. Long hair should be tied or pinned back.

6. Use protective procedures when indicated and use personal protective equipment in appropriate situations as described by the instructor.

7. Always use appropriate pipetting devices (when pipetting is necessary) and understand that any mouth pipetting is forbidden.

8. Return materials to proper locations, use proper care and handling of equipment, and keep the bench top clear of extraneous materials.

9. Report all injuries immediately to the instructor and follow instructions in the event of an emergency.
