The Doughboys

Let's just say that The Doughboys are one of my favourite bands, if not my favourite. The sound of their guitars is just awesome and the voice of Jon Kastner is amazing! I had been waiting a long time for The Doughboys to make an appearnace in Saskatoon and my dream finally came true on September 18, 1996. With the release of their new album, "Turn Me On", I was highly anticipating seeing these new songs performed live.

This concert was going to be a memorable one because another of my favourite bands was opening for them. Pluto, which I had seen once before, was sure to put on an exciting show as well.

The night finally arrived and I met my buddies at Louis', the Universitiy's campus pub. We showed up early, hoping to get a table by the floor, which we did.

At around 10:30 pm, Pluto came onto the stage and played their set which turned out to be very well put together. I won't go into detail however, because you can check out the separate review under "Pluto".

Pluto did an good job of priming the crowd for the upcoming headliners. The pit started to grow in numbers, and people waited for The Doughboys to make their appearance. Finally, the band manned the stage and began their set. Their overall performance was very good, however the sound quality was quite poor. The lead vocals sounded somewhat muffled and very quiet. At times you could not make out the lyrics and could barely tell if the song even had any words in it. The crowd tried telling Kastner that the mics were set to low and his reply was, "Really! Are you serious! I don't believe you".

Despite the poor sound quality, the show was very enjoyable as the band was very energetic sporting a number of on-stage jumps and spins. The mosh pit was very rough, making its venturers keep their heads up at all times. At the end of their initial set, Jon surprised the crowd by making his way around the perimetre of the pit via a railing and diving into the crowd. He proceeded to surf his way back up to the stage. It was very cool!

The encore was somewhat unique as The Doughboys and Pluto jammed together for a couple songs which seemed to please the crowd while making them want more.

Following the concert, I managed to swipe one of The Doughboys' playlist. The set was played in the following order:

I can not remember what their encore consited of, but I do know that it really rocked!
